San Gimignano

The little charming city of San Gimignano is more or less 150 km from Castiglione della Pescaia. Set on a hill on a height of 300 m and alike the majority of Tuscan cities it has an Etruscan origin. The architecture is typical of the middle ages; it has 16 towers (in the past they were 72 and for this reason San Gimignano is called the medieval New York) and because of this extraordinary beauty San Gimignano is considered a heritage of Unesco.

The oldest tower and it is 51 m high is called Torre Rognosa; the highest is Torre Gross, 54 m.high.

The dome is worth visiting; inside a number of frescoes of the senese school, paintings representing the Universal Judgement and New and Old Testament.

To visit also the municipal Palace, the museum of Holy arts, the archeological museum, the gallery of modern and contemporary art R. De Grada.
